This is the badge for "Seaman Sub-branch New Entrants" worn by Junior Seaman (Operator) ratings upon joining Raleigh. Notice that it is slightly smaller than the previous badge. Probably obsolete now.

Although as you state this style of badge is the Seaman Sub-Branch New Entrants badge I still think it is more likely to be the Seaman Spec badge that used to be worn on the lower right hand sleeve. My reasoning is that the device on this badge is quite a bit smaller than the device on the L/S Seaman Spec badge to the left of it and given the general age of the badges in the group bought by Billy I would say they were from the 90s when this badge would have been worn. I saw one of them being worn today at the remembrance ceremony at Gosport (it was a PO wearing a Warfare branch badge of crossed seawolf missile and torpedo with the letters SEA underneath and the small version of the shackle & marlin spike being worn on his lower right hand sleeve)

Thanks for the info. My reasoning behind my comment was that I wore this badge back in 1988.

You could be right but this badge (which is very slightly smaller) is also the badge worn by the RNR (Operations Seamanship) branch as an Ordinary Rate branch badge. I can definitely state this as it is identical to the badge I wore on my arm when I was an Ordinary Seaman in the RNR in 1995 and which I still own. In comparison with later Seaman Specialist badges it is a bit smaller.

Although the badge shown at the link is for a Seaman Spec it is not the same as the one shown by Billy or the one shown by Tony, their badges are a shackle and marlin spike but the one at the link is a shackle and flag. This is the newer one which was issued when the new Warfare Spec branch was formed and the Seamanship Specs also took over responsibility for the ROs/OM(C)s duties on the bridge hence the flag replacing the marlin spike.

I think that I might have confused the issue with the link that I posted in #17.

When I joined Raleigh in the late 80's as a JS(O)2 the badge that was worn by us was the small shackle and spike badge.

In #16 you said that you saw the small shackle and marlin spike badge being worn on the right cuff by a Petty Officer. I posted the link in #17 because I was thought that perhaps that was the badge that you had seen, but I guess you missed it.

I posted the link in #18 because this was the first time that I had seen it in use.

There was a thread a while back with the suggestion of a more up to date version of the book by May, Carman & Tanner. I for one would welcome this and I would be more than willing to assist if I could, but I fear that my knowledge on Trade badges is limited. It wasn't until I joined this forum that I realised what a complicated subject it was!

The crossed sea wolf missile and torpedo was the basic device for the Weapons Engineering Mechanic. The O was for Ordnance and the R for Radio. So you have a Petty Officer Weapons Engineering Mechanic (Ordnance), shortened to POWEM(O), a Leading Weapons Engineering Mechanic (Ordnance) or LWEM(O) and a Weapons Engineering Mechanic (Ordnance) or WEM(O), the next 2 badges are POWEM(R) and LWEM(R). In the mid 90s the Operator Mechanic was introduced and they adopted the same basic device but with different letters (they were supposed to replace the WEMs, and various other branches, who were supposed to be phased out but today we still have a small number of WEMs whereas the Operator Mechanic branches have all fallen by the wayside). The AW badge is a Leading Operator Mechanic (Above Water) or LOM(AW), the C badge is the basic device for the Operator Mechanic (Communications) these replaced the Radio Operators, and the CSM badge is a Leading Operator Mechanic (Communications)(Submarines). These gold badges were all worn on the Number 1 uniform, red badges are no longer worn.
