Thank you Peter, i have reason to believe the picture is from winchester barracks 1958, the recruit is Terry Dene some pop star of the 50,s starting his national service but never quite made it due to a nervous breakdown i think i read .

'Idol On Parade' was I thought pretty dire and having an American heavy (William Bendix) playing the RSM made it even less convincing.
One of the better 'Going through National Service' films (as opposed to simply an army film set in NS days) was, I believe, 'These Dangerous Years' with singer Frankie Vaughan -who had actually done his national service some years before. Plus a much younger Inspector Wexford, George Baker, as the Padre. |
