Default WESTERN COMMAND WEAPONS TRAINING SCHOOL

This is an old subject. I am trying to find out information when this unit was formed and when it finished. I have been informed that it was 1st part of WW2. Any further information would be well received. Thank you. Regards.

Martin.

A google search brings up some information:

The above is just one of a number of hits on a search for the Training School.

Default Western Comd Wpn Trg School

From 5 min search on the www:
Four IWM images (none showing the school sign), the earliest dated 17 Sep 40 and the rest late 1942:
H 4209
H 25333
H 25327
H 25331
The School was located at Altcar, near Formby, Lancashire.

Not sure if this helps you but just googling etc produces earliest hit Sept 40 and latest hit Nov 1944. Of course censorship restricts reporting.

An IWM photo has this: A Westland Lysander of No. 13 Squadron RAF based at Hooton Park, Cheshire, provides aiming practice for members of the Home Guard, at the Western Command Weapons Training School at Altcar, near Formby, 17 September 1940. H4209

I had hoped that the precise answer might be in one of the two books I have about Altcar Rifle Range, sadly it is not, they merely confirm that the School was at Altcar during WW2.

I have a contemporary note that records a sighting of this badge worn on battle dress by a soldier of the Welch Regiment in December 1945.
