Artillery Badge Clarification
I have returned to a fairly large collection of badges that came my way some time ago. They appear to have been on display boards for a number of years but I expect that some of them are dodgy. They are all British badges and unfortunately I do not have much in the way of reference material for them as, until reasonably recently, my interest has been in other areas. I did post some of the badges some time ago and received some excellent advice and valued opinions from forum members.
Among the group were these four Artillery badges. They are all different. Can someone please tell me the signicance of the differences? The first has H.A.C under the crown and the motto, "ARMA PACIS FULCRA". The second has the "UBIQUE" under the crown and the motto, "QUO PAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT". The third has a sprig of leaves under the crown and the motto, "QUO PAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT" The fourth little guy (collar badge, I expect) has "UBIQUE" under the crown and "CITY OF GLASGOW ARTILLERY" on the banner. Do they look alright? Donny B. |

Arma Pacis Fulcra - Arms are the Lever of Peace.
The motto of the Honourable Artillery Company.

As John says, the first is of the H.A.C. Look for it in Wikipedia.
The second is the normal Royal Artillery badge and the one without Ubique (Everywhere) is of Volunteer/Territorial units that were not allowed to wear that Battle Honour.

You blokes were pretty quick. Thankyou for that.
Do the badges look to be dinkum or dodgy do you think? Donny B. |

I've never seen the City of Glasgow Artillery badge before. When was that issued? David

See Lichfield "The Territitorial Artillery " page 288 worn from 1955

Thanks Peter. I haven't got Westlake's book so will look out for it. Is it hard to find? David

David,
I bought my copy from the man himself which he signed on 16th February 1992. The book is of considerable interest to badge collectors as the badges covered include those of the many Infantry and Yeomanry Territorial Battalions converted to R.A. I think the book is out of print but worth looking for on E bay or Abebooks. Peter

Thanks for the info, Peter. The signature doesn't look like Westlake, though. It looks like Norman Litchfield. Just looked it up on Abe Books. There are a few copies available around US$156 - 159. It may have to wait a while, unless I can find one cheaper somewhere. David

Just looked on Amazon.ca. They have a couple of copies for - wait for it, CDN$626.28!!! That will definitely have to go on my "wait until I win the lottery" list. I'm afraid to look anywhere now. Having been scared sh**less by the price of that new limited edition book on the SAS, I didn't think any other militaria books could be that expensive. David

David,
Senior moment, The Territorial Artillery was of course written by the late Norman Lichfield, apologies. Peter

Your second badge is the standard RA badge, but with the strengthening behind the crown and hairpin slider, which dates these badges to post February 1917.

Thanks, Thomas. That information, along with the earlier comments, is very useful to me. I gather that the implication, also, is that the badges look to be okay.
Since David says that he has never seen a City of Glasgow Artillery badge does that mean that they are reasonably uncommon? Donny B. |
