53rd SL Regt
An interesting card.
In May 2009 the military auctioneers Marlows sold a shield - picture attached - on which were a number of painted wooden badges. The largest were the RA gun and below it an RNF cap badge. At the bottom of the shield was another badge -scan attached - that has mystified Military Heraldry Society members for 50 years - and remained unidentified by RA expert the late Norman Litchfield. It seems logical that the unidentified badge relates to the two badges above it - otherwise why put it on the shield? With a stretch of the imagination the badge could be both a searchlight with its beam - and a very stylised grenade with flames above. Which would at last identify this badge as that of 53 Searchlight Regiment? The formation signs on the shield are presumably those with which the regiment served. The only source I have says that 53 SL only served with Home Forces and all the signs are from there. Does anyone have an orbat that would help further? All comments welcome Postwarden |

No Orbat I'm afraid, but a bit of collateral is provided by an IWM image - details to follow - taken in Ulster showing soldiers - mostly British but also some US Army - of the Jewish faith at a religious meeting. One of the soldiers is wearing the mystery flash (searchlight and beam) on his right arm.
