Default Cutlass Clothing

Hi all,

So, still going through my stored items and one thing that strikes me is how many Merchant Navy items (caps, jackets, trousers, shoulder boards) are marked with "Cutlass Clothing".

I can find nothing about this company and was hoping that someone might be able to provide information (dates, location etc.) as to who they are?

Many thanks,

Andrew

I've just seen on a Google search they even have buttons back stamped too.

Thanks Phil

Other than the buttons that you put me on to, I can find nothing about Cutlass Clothing. Going on the items that I have, I would guess 1970's or 80's.

Can't find anything which is strange as photo shows a "Cutlass" registered design.

Could there be a far eastern connection , copyright/registered designs didn't really apply in India/Singapore/Hong Kong etc . I'm sure there were numerous tailors/outfitters who would supply Merchant Navy personel with uniforms.

Thanks Mike,

Not something that I had thought of to be honest. It is slightly frustrating, as like you, I can find nothing and given that I have a few items by "Cutlass" I am slightly surprised.

Default “Cutlass” brand

Hi Andrew

Unfortunately I can’t help regarding the location of the brand “Cutlass”, but here is a pair of shoulder boards I have in my spares – the backing of the braid is purple, not blue as it appears in the photo, and the Merchant Navy button is marked “Gaunt London” (so no help there).

Found a pair of shoulder boards on eBay :

Quote:
Made from black wool and gold bullion wire. Complete with a superb pair of post 1952 Cunard Line Officer's gilt buttons. The reverse with gold tooled tailor's details for "Cutlass".
Also another pair with a different label (see photo).

Thank you both.

Mike, I have the same label in a Cunard uniform (see below). Taking note of what Phil said above, I checked the buttons, but they are FIRMIN.

I have been searching now and then, even tried searching NA online. Nothing at all shows up, I'm out of ideas of where to search. I also wondered if they were a commonwealth or Asian company.

I wondered too if Cutlass may be a brand name used by a bigger parent company, and records are hidden away in their private files.

Thanks Phil.

Like you, I have exhausted every avenue. given the amount of Items that are marked "Cutlass Clothing" or just "Cutlass", I find it surprising that there is nothing

This looks promising: a search of the IPO reveals fourteen 'Cutlass' registered trade marks, of which only one seems to have been a producer of uniforms, headgear and other items of clothing.

The owners appear to be (have been) Miller Rayner Danco Ltd., known suppliers of crews' uniforms. Seems worthy of further investigation:

The mark isn't the same as those in your posted examples, but I suppose if it is the same outfit (no pun intended) the company could have rebranded at some point.

I have pressed the "thank you button".
I had been looking for Cutlass for years.
