Default "Cook" Trade badge

Reference the A, B, C Trade badges that existed with the italic style lettering, has anyone got any info about this badge:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WW2-ATS-WOMENS...1%7C240%3A1318

A flatter C supposedly for ATS and Army Cooks?

Also does anyone have the lists for ACC trades and there respective trade badges?

Cheers
Danny

I was an A3 RTG Royal Signals, all our cooks, male and female, were B3 though the joke was that some were still working on it. I know of no-one who ever held a 'C' or third class trade. We didn't wear trade badges but some attached units did. All were 'A' or 'B'. Hope that helps.
Yours
Matti

I understood that to qualify as a 3rd class cook you had to be able to cook indigestion in 10 different ways and burn water. Or as the old cry went "Who callled the cook a £$%^, or who called the £$%^ a cook"

Joking really as I came across some excellent cooks in my 15 years in a ginger suit.

As looking through the Brian L .Davis book it lists in the 1944 regs, Hospitial Cooks as Group A and B trades and entitled to wear either the gothic A or B trade badge, also it lists Baker and Butcher as Group C trades and entitled to wear the gothic C trade badge.

But it also lists Cook (other than Hospitial) as a Group B trade but allowed to wear the italic C trade trade badge.

Can't find anything on the square C as listed on the ebay listing though.

Gentlemen,
I'm very disappointed in those of you who lowered themsleves and have chosen to use this Forum to ridicule the skills of military cooks, or chefs as they now prefer to be called, an Army Marches on it Stomach, they do a fantastic job and it is one of the hardest courses in the British Army (nobody has passed it yet!!)

Well done the Aldershot Camel Corps!

Hello all,

The badge shown is in fact recorded in British Army Proficiency Badges by Edwards and Langley. Page 97 item no 110 'C in wreath block letter' there is also a good image of the badge as worn by ATS Cooks. The badge is about 6cm across. I have one, but I cannot comment if the one shown is original or a repro. More info if you are really interested.

The ACC had 2 mottoes, first was "When its brown its cooked, when its black its f....d." and second, "Give them plenty, one each."

To be serious though, the ACC and regimental cooks, seemed to be the butt of every joke in the Army. I bet they were pleased when they rebadged to RLC, but they still retained their real motto "We Sustain".

ORISKANY.
