Toye & Co
Are Toye & Co private purchase makers of insignia or are they makers of issue badges?

They hold contracts from the MoD (and many others) so yes, they manufacture MoD issued badges. That said, these days they are probably no longer maker marked.

Toye & Co
Thanks Dave, I was not sure if they were purely private purchase specialists.

They used to be big makers of Masonic jewels and were at one stage Toye, Kenning & Spencer. Their hallmarked work is "T.K & S", logically enough....
I think that Toye & Co is the earlier mark but I may stand corrected here. |

You are unlikely to see any recent MoD ordered badges from any of the manufacturers which are maker marked. Current MoD policy (introduced several years ago) require that anything supplied for MoD use should not be manufacturer marked in any way. This is written into the contract. Can't see how this would apply to vehicles but it certainly applies to anything else.
I have seen several recent non-MoD badges supplied by Toye, Kenning & Spencer marked simply "T&S". Dave. |

George Kenning were founded in 1860 and acquired Spencer & Co in 1947. They were in turn acquired by Toye & Co. in 1956, adopting the current trading name of Toye, Kenning and Spencer in 1962. |

Here is a second pattern anodised Army Catering Corps cap badge marked TOYE KENNING & SPENCER LTD
It should date between the 1980s and 1993. (dates corrected) The MOD contract specifications that badges and packaging should not be maker marked was effective from 2012 but some residual stocks of marked items were in the system beyond that date. Tim

I have an enamel badge for some obscure, short-lived veteran's association that is marked "Toye & Co" so that has helped to date this item for me!
