I think they may well be fake.

Both are indeed fakes.

Default Essex Yeomanry

Keith,
I put one of these up on the forum a few months ago, it came with a job lot and had the loops E-W broken which I replaced.

The opinion was that it was fake, although someone had a photo of an Essex Yeoman wearing a similar badge.

I believe the photo you mention Rob shows the 1916 version with the scroll removed. I promised I would not say any more on the topic as to the whys and wherefores but suffice to say I’m 100% certain the badge you showed around Christmas and these two are all from the same stable - that being Martin Marsh.

I’ve only said this much as I do not wish for there to be confusion or any sort of credence given to the Marsh die, which I highlighted with the relevant seeding patterns showing it was indeed the same as the fake from his catalogue.

Default Solid Essex Yeomanry

Luke, I agree that my badge had similarities to the ones you have shown from Martin Marsh.

As we have said before, never say never with badge collecting and I would be annoyed to say the least if it turned out to be pukka and I'd binned it.

I cannot see why anyone would take the scroll from a 1916 badge or for that matter be allowed to wear it, but again, never say never.

Rob,

Identical rather than similarities. The badge shown and yours is unquestionably from the Marsh die.

If you ask the person who I believe showed you the picture you refer to as your source for the scroll-less badge I’m sure they will tell you the story behind what I’ve touched on re the 1916. But as I said I do not want to disseminate it on a public forum for several reasons including a promise I made.
