"The British Soldier in the 20th Century" Part Series.
Selling as a lot only, not as single issues.
A part series of “The British Soldier in the 20th Century”. A part series consisting of booklets 1 – 7 plus the two Regimental Specials “The Gloucestershire Regiment” and “The Welch Regiment”, written and illustrated by Mike Chappell and published 1987-1990 by Wessex Publishing. In 1990 it was projected that there would be at least 16 uniform and equipment titles plus Regimental Specials. I know of booklets 1-10 and the Glosters and Royal Welch specials existing but not if any others were actually published. (I’ve seen bound volumes which have only 1-10 plus those two Specials). Anyway, here are 9 x booklets 1-7 plus the Glosters and Welch Regiment specials, offered as a grouping, I’m not selling single booklets. £30 (£3.33 a booklet) Plus £5.50 for the cost 1st or 2nd Class standard or signed for postage within mainland UK (if less, then surplus postage refunded). Sale to the sender of the first PM requesting the booklets. Last edited by leigh kitchen; 09-03-24 at 11:27 PM. Reason: Mistyped. |

These look to be from the various Osprey booklets, and a similar series was issued with the Del Prado figures.

These are A4 sized publications, same artist and author as some of the Osprey books, they're not extracts from the the books.
Some of the Del Prado pamphlets are extracts from Ospreys and feature artwork and text by Chappell. For example these: |

Mike Chappell was to produce a long list of these booklets. But for what ever reason, stopped production.

Yes, l lost track of which booklets were published years ago although I liked and wanted them. I picked them up here and there years ago, these are duplicates of some I have.
Mike Chappell died a few years ago in the south of France, some years after retirement. |

Wikipedia entry re. Mike Chappell, it lists Osprey books written and/or illustrated by him:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mich...litary%20books. The only booklet in "The British Soldier in the 20th Century" series mentioned as being authored by him is no. 2, "Field Service Head Dress 1902 to the present day". |

As a one time keen model soldier collector, I really enjoyed Mike's books. I think I still have his Napoleonic book and just loved the real nature of his illustrations.
Jack (?) Cassin-Scott is another who comes to mind too. |

I particularly like Chappell's illustrations, he tended not to fudge detail, unlike some who'd "blur" a detail such as a badge or show one that may not be correct just to "complete" the illustration.

I have been a model soldier collector and painter for a good 60+ years, and still am. I actually got started collecting because of it. My library, established since my first uniform book in 1965, is predominately books on uniforms and my favorite uniform plates in my collection are by Knotel and the Buquay post cards. These were produced in the late 19th century to the early 20th century and were all hand painted.
