I would have thought that a UK made officer's badge would have had a better looking back.
I'm no expert but the back doesn't seem right to me. Mick |

I am not comfortable with that badge. The overlay looks "grainy", and the wire attachment for the overlay is odd looking.

I would also have expected the bidding to be much higher than it is now if it was a legit badge.
My gut instinct says its not right. Mick |

I'm not good at making decisions on good & bad badges I can't seem to say more than I like this one & I don't like the other, but I'm not comfortable with this one shown here. I just don't know why. I got most of my badges before there were any duds around & I never had to make these decisions. Yes mick I can see a clump of metal (or what looks likemetal)at 11 0-clock. The badge shows up gold colour on my monitor so it's hard to say much.

While I've been watching this one with interest I was also bidding onE that was hidden in a lot of modern British items... 310197099597... I tried to bottom fish the lot with a bid of 117 pounds and thought I had it but was clipped at the end for 119 pounds... the seller probably got a big shock when the lot went for that but was probably under priced by 100 pounds... hope someone on the forum got lucky with it.... ( don't feel sorry for me as it would have been my third VIII RECCE)

Almost looks like there are fines cracks in the back - like peeling paint??

Would there not be hallmarks on the badge being made in the U.K. Anything silver I have made in the U.K. including sweetheart pins, cigarette cases, and a RCR collar has proper hallmarks. I may be blind but I do not see them here.

This is the reply I got in response to my request for a better picture of the back and of the silver mark. I quote:-
"hi sorry i cant get a good close up but it is a genuine mark as is the badge cheers for now eileen" |

Seems like another seller who thinks any mark on it means it genuine!

VIII Recce
Twopennyworth:
A Canadian Regt wishing to adopt a new badge in a wartime environment. An officer finds a jewellers in a small market town who is willing to make up the bade and the deal is done. Now, it will take time and money to submit the new badge to an Assay Office in Birmingham or London- do the officer bother, or take his new badge to proudly wear? This jeweller isn't a name known by me for making badges. Is this a hypothesis worthy of submitting? Stephen. |

Too good to be true?
Some how I missed this thread. I spent a while thinking it over and staring in detail at my other Recce badge (Mazesa C.40) before I made a bid. I will post some better pictures of this badge when I receive it. I don't know what to think of this badge now? A new one off copy or a genuine badge made by a small obscure jeweller? I certainly respect everybody's opinion here but is there anything definitive about this badge being a copy or are we just talking instinct? Good thing the seller has a 7 day return policy.
Does anyone have pictures of a genuine badge (Mazeas C.40.a) they could share? |

This string was posted sometime ago. It deals with the provenance of the VIII Recce with the Canada scroll. Note Doug's comments in the last post. http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ght=VIII+recce
And, near the very end of this string, Doug N has posted an image of the badge in question. (The VIII Recce with Canada scroll.) However the provenance is not clear. |
