Hi Steve:
It seems to be getting harder to determine original, period pieces - from all areas of collecting. I have never seen a RFC cap or collar hallmarked with the mini plate before either. I have a few Officer RFC caps & collars hallmarked by Gaunt but they are both stamped into the bronze (attached images). I'm not sure why the collar is missing the "J.R"; another mystery perhaps. I can't offer an opinion either way about the authenticity of your item. It seems unique to me but otherwise looks good. It would be scary if it is a replica or faked in some way. |

A confession of sorts, or an observation. I have two RFC bronze cap badges with the Gaunt makers-mark (not "hallmark"as I said earlier, my apologies.) BOTH of these have been converted to a pin broach style. Perhaps the conversion was done by Gaunt, hence the impression?
The curved "Gaunt London" mark on the collar has the normal lug fasteners. The cap badge mark measures 11mm (maybe 10.5) on both cap badges and the curved mark is 9mm. I just read the BBF info on Gaunt strikes; I should have done that first of course. I hope this extra information helps. |

A photo would certainly help, Gaunt made a huge amount of RFC badges and they are fairly common.

Here is mine, that I just got. Gaunt common version I guess?
