This appears to be an "aged" example of the repro 61st Bn being offered nearly daily on ebay. Now it is surfacing in Canada as a "real" badge. Caveat emptor.

Hi...Bill as an inexperience buyer what do you see in this badge that makes you say it is a repo...I am sure you must be correct...I am just trying to get some knowledge on being able to identify repo badges..This seller has other badges for sale and when you hear one is a reproduction it cast doubt on the other badges listed...

Sum of the parts. There are several concerns. First is the overall lack of detail in the striking. Second, the badge is brass, which while not a conclusive factor in itself, is typical of the repros. Most CEF badges were pickled or some other dark finish.

Note the similarities, down even to the flaws/marks on the badge. Cavet emptor.

Chap in Calgary who has posted this "original" 61 Bn for sale, confirmed it came in from Badgeman2005, in the UK.

Dealers are going to come and go. Problem is that there are a lot of these badges out and about, and their appearance is changing. Some are being "aged" to give the badge the look of age. The phoney badges need to be documented and the word spread so that they won't trick collectors.

Here is a listing for a good example of the 61st. Even with the crappy image, one cans see the detail is much crisper/sharper. The badge appears to be a copper base with the pickled finish, both of which are typical of the period. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/WWI-Canadian-...item43c1e236ce

The biggest seller of fake badges on ebay. He operates under several IDs under the name Croft Collectibles. Out and out purveyor of fake badges.
