Would a WW I British Sergeant Major have worn just a crown on his lower sleeve?

Yes, but on service dress they would be worn on both lower sleeves. Other forms of dress usually on the lower left only.

Before July 1915 it was the badge of the majority of ‘warrant officers’ that were then of a single grade, although there were a few with high status as specialists who wore a different badge, such as Master Gunners 1st and 2nd Class, Conductors (AOC), and Staff Sergeant Majors 1st Class (ASC and APC). Unlike subsequently the badge shown was used on its own, without any additions beneath.
