On my way back from the 2ND Gulf War i had an AK47 bayonet taken off me by the Royal Military Police. I did ask wether i could keep it as i collected Military at the time, but got told if i wanted it i would have to write to The War Trophies place. I don't know where now as I've forgot. Very annoying due to the fact you could buy them in markets in the UK.

I've heard similar stories from WW2 Canadians soldiers returning from Europe, being told, by the MPs, to surrender all and every german handguns (and other ordnance...) if they had any.The trick was that the an officer in a unit put spurious official-looking labels saying that it was for the "regimental museum". hello Jo,
There is no more museum 14-18 in Hesdin. There were many officers from different headquarters in this city from the rear front ...... This might explain that? Moreover, the "collection" spirit was far from those regions more or less devastated by the war. Bonne journée. Jean-Paul |

The IWM was founded in 1917 (first called National then changed to Imperial)and I believe initially intended to have examples of everything, weapons, uniforms etc- clearly impossible to sustain in the light of subsequent wars that, for most people, were totally unforseen.

Sadly, the IWM at Lambeth is not a patch on what it was in the 1950's and 60's
It was a real treasure trove then; the badge rooms displayed every variation of WW1 and, as far as I can recall WW2, cap badge and shoulder titles. Having a subsequent fire (arson) didn't help but the displays have been thinned down so much that it's a shadow of its former self. |
