Small dug antique ornamental plaques
Has anyone ever come across the likes of these brass/bronze plaques before? They are 3.5cm x 3cm in size. I have dug 3 so far from the same general area. The corner holes seem to me to point to a sequence of attachment, possibly by chain? Not specifically military but of historical merit.
The main subject is apparently Sir Walter Raleigh. The first plaque depicts him on bended knee accepting a Royal Charter from the bethroned Queen Elizabeth I (1584). Second plaque depicts Raleigh and another Lord standing on the deck of a sailing ship Third plaque depicts Raleigh and landing party on a beach. Evidently there should be more plaques to complete this series which evidently deals with a 16th century voyage of exploration. I wonder how the complete artefact was meant to be displayed, whether as personal ornamentation or to be hung somewhere. Comments welcome GTB |
