Chances of finding an original "SS & Dagger" or "Dagger" Commando Badge
Hi All,
I have just picked up a really nice Commando beret (dated 1944). You can clearly see where badge backing cloth and where the vertical SS & Dagger or Dagger were attached. What are the chances of me finding an original "SS & Dagger" or "Dagger"? Regards Allan |

Only the officers of No.2 Commando wore the SS and Dagger. That was a bullion wire badge. Sadly that have been faked. The OR's wore the dagger on its own.
Chances of finding a genuine 'spoon' dagger........not very likely. With out photographs it is impossible to form a concrete opinion about your beret, but the SS and Dagger in metal is not a circa WW2 badge. SS or Special Service Brigade was an incredibly unpopular title for the Commandos, so much so people like Peter Young ignored it and protested because it sounded a lot like the Waffen SS. Very unpopular at the time, so I dont imagine there are many of those bullion badges around.

Hi,
Thank you for responding. They sound almost unobtainable. I know the beret is original and from Normandy (where I live). I will content myself with a repro badge, just for display purposes. Regards Allan |

Actually I`m wrong. The officers of No.2 did wear a metal dagger with SS on either side. See page 197 British Army Uniforms and Insignia of WW2.
