When i was in the Cheshire Yeomanry Squadron we couldnt get staybright foxes for a period of time. (in the early 90's) So when we joined we had to buy the metal ones from the PRI. At the time we used to buff them down with sand paper and polish them.

Other thing was officers would often attach the gold wire side hat badge to their peak caps. More odd stuff the cav do lol. Or certainly did.

Whilst I was serving as a permanent staff SQMS with Y Squadron in York in the mid 80s I purchased a couple of hundred of the bi metal badges and sold them through the squadron to anybody who wanted to buy one. SNCOs tended not to buy them but stuck with the aluminium alloy issued badge. Perhaps as the soldiers were promoted they hung on to their brass and white metal badge rather than use the AA issued badge.
Officers were issued with the gilded brass and nickel badge fitted with two loops on the reverse.
