I think the plate shown is from Wall -ISBN 978-1-920315-53-5. The author is teaching in England but had no copies left when I contacted him. I got mine through Just Done Publications. No shares in the company,:honest Cheers Dave

This badge measures about 56mm x 44mm, it is just under 2mm thick (at the edges of the cross) & appears to be cast - but from a mould taken from a diestruck badge if it is.
A legitimate workshop or locally made badge, or an just some kind of fake? Anybody know please? |

This example is new to me although I have a white metal cast badge with perfect-ish detail. Owen and Wall do not show your badge, however Radford shows a cast brass badge like yours and cites it as locally made 1940-45.It is no surprise that some argue of the errors in these books but unfortunately Radford does not expand upon this badge. As you no doubt know there was some irregular badge manufacture in Rhodesia during this period but given the function of this unit during the Second World War I'm struggling with this casting.(shoulder titles can be rough) I don't like it but given the nature of the game would keep it for now. It will be interesting to see what the other Rhodie collectors think. Cheers Dave

I've sent the photos to a friend of mine who will know. It's outside of my collecting sphere as I mainly deal with post UDI (1965-1980) but I don't believe it was an issued item.
On the topic of reference books, as I say on my web site there is not one definitive book on Rhodesian militaria. Owen's book certainly does not cover all the insignia and neither does Radford's, although they are both quite good reference books. Compliment them with Dudley Walls ‘Insignia and History of the Rhodesian Armed Forces 1890-1980 (4th Edition)’ and you have a pretty good reference, but there are still items missing from all three books. There are also items, such as para wings that are on my web site that aren't in any of the three books mentioned. My web site at the moment is being updated so some pages look a bit out of kilter. |

Royal Rhodesia Regt
HI,
Just to confirm that the Queens crown was taken out of the design of most Rhodesian badges as a direct result of Rhodesia being declared a Republic in March 1970. The Queen suspended the use of all Royal symbols & the use of the word Royal. Hence, the Royal Rhodesian Regt. became the Rhodesia Regt. & the Royal Rhodesian Airforce became the Rhodesian Airforce. Some military units cut off the crowns whilst other units waiting for new badges to arrive. This affected those badges that used the QC & included badges of rank as well. So UDI had nothing to do with the removal of the QC and some badge books also mention 1972 as the change over year, but this is definately not the case. Ruwa |

Royal Rhodesia Regiment.
Ruwa, I dig your call-sign; that dorp in Mashonaland East.
Do you not think UDI had a big influence on the decision made in the name of the Queen. John
