Default RAF cap badge

Hi All
I have had this badge for quite a long time. When I got it I was told it was from the 1st RAF Regiment, WWII. I was told there were 4 of these with the numbers 1 - 4 for the 4 regiments which were formed.
Can anyone confirm or reject this info?
The badge is original and the numeral 1 is soldered to the rear of the crown. I don't know if it's a home made job or official and would appreciate any info. Sorry I don't have a photo of the rear.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Alex

There is only one RAF Regiment, there were never four. The "Regiment" is subdivided into Squadrons. There were/are no distinguishing insignia on the hat badges or buttons, they are as per any other member of the RAF. Today, various Sqns. have TRFs on their combat uniforms. I believe the badge you have was made to "con" somebody! Regards, DJ.

It may be for No.1 Armoured Car Company RAF Regt., to be worn on the slouch hat or pith helmet, I think it would look a lttle out of place on the RAF GS Cap.

Default RAF cap badge - more information

Hi All
For anyone that is interested, after some sound advice I have got some information from the RAF museum, which I have posted below.
Quote from reply:

"Forgive me saying so, "But what nonsense some people do talk" and you were right not to believe it. This badge relates to No. 1 School of Technical Training at RAF Halton which from 1922 until 1928 distinguished the 'Sections', later re-named Wings within the School by soldering a number to the cap badge. I have heard it said that the first job an Apprentice did was to cut out and file from brass sheet his Wing number and then soplder it to the back of the badge, but this may be an apocryphal story and they may have been formally manufactured with the numbers attached, or the numbers stamped out and then soldered on in Workshops.
Halton had 2 Sections up to 1925 Nos. 1 & 2 though accommodation for a No 4 Section was under construction. Each Squadron within a Wing was distinguished by a coloured cap band A Green; B Blue and C Red. In October 1925 they were designated as Wings and in August the following year No. 4 Wing from Cranwell moved over en bloc. There was no No. 3 Wing. In December 1928 this system was changed, the numbers disappeared and the cap bands henceforth represented Wings with the Squadrons being distinguished by a coloured disc worn behind the badge made of an early form of plastic - Ivorine or suchlike - A Black, B White, C Yellow."

This sort of information is invaluable and I hope other collectors can use it for their own store of knowledge.
Cheers,
Alex
