Default RTR -- the incredible shrinking badge?

Did the RTR's change to a QC a/a badge entail a certain reduction in size, or is what I've got here just a very large collar dog (it's lugged, after all)? I'd never actually had a QC one before, so have only just been able to compare this new arrival (marked JR Gaunt London) with one of my KC versions.

Hi there,

Just had a look at my berets. I'm only recently ex RTR, so both are current Q/C.

The a/a badge from my working beret is slightly smaller than the w/m one on my best beret. Not quite as noticable as the difference between your two badges though.

To cause further confusion, both badges were issued to me through the regiment, and neither has any makers mark at all.

Not much help, but backs up the different size issue!

Cheers, Paul.

Thanks for that, Belfin -- at least it suggests that there are differing sized cap badges. I also placed my QC version up against the photo in John Bodsworth's recent book Uniforms and Insignia of the RAC since 1946 and it coincides exactly (assuming Bodsworth's photos are reproduced 1:1, that is!).

Hi, what you have is a, for want of a better term, fat crown officer's, probably silver or silver plate, cap badge. the earlier Q/C were of a thinner crown design,[ thin crown?] Shown a 1960 hall-marked. The other ranks were identical but struck so I'm assuming only Gaunt made them, unless some-one knows differently. the only metal version I have of the fat crown is slidered maybe some-one has a lugged version? I've not bothered to much with post 1953 badges so can't be definitive

Many thanks for the photos, Fearnaught -- didn't think the topic of QC RTR badges could be so complicated!
