80th Infantry (Res) Div. 10th Bn Black Watch set
Hi team
Here is a recent addition. Quite an interesting story for the 80th,a reserve training Division, it was also used in Deception Op Fortitude as a notional (Phantom) Div. The 10th battalion Black Watch (Royal Highland Regt.) was raised as a training Bn and formerley part of the Orkney and Shetland Defence Force. When it comes to Tartan regt Flash's is there a authorized placement ie above or below the Formation sign? Also to get WWII Tartans flashes howcan you tell if they are WWII or later? cheers Phill |

A very nice and rare set you have there. As far as placement goes, it varied from division and regiment.
There is unfortunately no way to determine when a tartan flash was made. One can easily obtain tartan material from old cut up kilts, plaids etc., today. Just such material was usually used in WW2 flashes and other insignia prior to that time as well. CB

Thanks CB
Yes it would be difficult to identify original WWII era Tartan flashes however there must be some sources out there, also I have seen them on militaria website's and have always wonder how could one tell? cheers Phill |

As I said, one can't tell for certain. Experience and gut feeling helps, but is not infallible. Providence is one way to be sure, but this would be a rare situation.
Yours are good in my opinion as they have an appearance commensurate with expected age and style. CB
