Hi all can you shed some light onto this badge please? For start it is made to that of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and is heavy, three loops to rear, these appear to be Silver and badge is well made by "STOKES" so could it be Silver? did he make such badges? and is this a common badge?

The ANZAC badge surmounts the Coronet, but the scroll is blank, why would this be so? On a British badge I would associate this then to be Territorial Army? And when would this have been worn? any ideas on this?

Have to ask but hate doing do, just what do these go for if I was seeking to purchase one? in white metal as this is I guess, or if it is Silver? (passes the white paper test by rubbing it turns it black), but cannot find any Hallmarks? what would prices be ??

In truth I am leaning towards it being Silver because of weight and the paper test. Many thanks in Advance, Billy

There’s one for sale here Billy priced a $165 https://www.militaria-sales.com.au/p...-badge-194853/ also says the badge is WM and dates 1948-53. No idea how realistic that price is is or how accurate the info. I’m sure one of our Australasian collector cousins will confirm. All the best, Luke

Hi Billy

Stokes is a Melbourne based medal/badge maker, who made many of the Aussie badges. I can't comment on this one, but all the other badges I have or have seen have "Stokes & Son Melbourne" on them, but granted, none of them are silver and none officer badges.

Just found an old thread, to have a look at:

https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ead.php?t=5468

Not much help, but every bit counts, I guess!

Cheers, Tim

Hi Billy,

This is a nice White metal (no Australian badges were made in silver) 41st Battalion (Byron Scottish) hat badge worn around 1940 to 1953 or so. Worn on a tam-o-shanter.

Worth around AUD $150-175 IMHO. Starting to become hard to find these days as well.

The 41st Battalion (Byron Scottish) was a small reserve unit based in various towns around the New South Wales North Coast region (Lismore etc).

Mick

Hi Mick, rubbing on white paper leaves a strong Black mark, an indicator to be Silver? and fairly heavy/substantial, the photo looks good thanks for showing! A nice well made badge actually, coukc Officers have been Silver?

Many thanks Billy

No mate. In the Australian Army post WW2 there generally were no silver officer badges worn. Within the Byron Scottish, the officers and ORs would have worn the same badge.

in reality the badge should be worth $150+
however, there are numerous for sale and you should be able to get one for around $100aust
a quick search of ebay found 3 for less than $100aust.

Years ago I met a retired sergeant from the regiment, one of the original members (around 1947). He told me that a standard Argylle and Sutherland badge was worn until the Australian pattern was delivered from Stokes. He gave me his badge, which I still have.

Its good Kingsley when you get one from original owner, a part if them still lives on within the badge and memories kick in when you handle it! Glad you still have it and hope you enjoy, how it ended up over here is anyones guess but was mounting my Scottish badges and now I have a lovely large gap where this was!

And thanks for all the help on this gents hope you enjoyed the photo's, the link was very informative, so thanks for that also, billy
