Default Westlake shoulder titles - which book

Hi All,

have been looking at buying an updated copy of Westlakes Collecting Shoulder Titles. I have the original but photos are poor. I see it was revised and updated in 1996, then a new copy out last year. Can anyone advise which is the best for photo quality ?

Cheers, Mark

Hello Mark,

I only have the 2020-dated edition (which is a reprint of the 1996 2nd Edition, I believe), so I can't comment on differences between the different versions, but I will say that the illustrations in the one I have are pretty good (certainly good enough for my purposes).

Cheers Kevin,

you say illustrations - are they photos or illustrations of the titles ?

From what I remember the illustrations (they're photos) in the 1st and 2nd editions were of the same quality (I had both, gave the 1st edition away).

I didn't realize there was a new edition so I'm very glad this was brought up! Especially as my 1st Edition is past well worn and I've mislaid the supplement...

Will let you know if photos have improved. Wonder if K&K will ever be revised and updated with better photos. Would need a lot of contributions of photos from collectors/dealers as I believe their collection was broken up...

Listing here on ebay that has closed, but it includes examples pages from the 2020 edition. (Which was published in June 2020 if that is of interest to anyone)

Mark, I have the 1996 revised edition (Leo Cooper publisher) and the Pen & Sword 2020 edition. The photos in the 1996 are better than the 2020 edition. I use both since the 2020 ed has additional info that my ‘96 ed lacks. Perhaps a future edition will have far better photos, as even the ones in my ‘96 copy aren’t stellar.

To update - have received the book today(updated 2020 edition)and the photos are terrible ! Probably because it's a paperback as glossy paper in a hardback might be better.Never mind, it was worth a try at £14 all in...

It's a shame..but what is useful is the section on schools and training establishments. Not sure if this was in the previous books. I was thinking of getting into OTC badges till I've seen this lengthy list of colleges, schools etc. !
