Default 6G - Shoulder Title ID needed please

The only one I can think of is 6th Gurkha, but shouldnt there be an R at the end?

Can anyone identify this unit and when it was worn?

Thank you for viewing.

Ive heard of the 6th Garhwal Rifles, good call. There is now another problem it would appear that Gurkha titles are missing the R (thank you to a kind forum member for that information), so now I need to research the Garhwal rifles shoulder titles.

Does anyone know of a book that covers Indian Army shoulder titles that might help?

Many thanks.

Ah, I see why the Gurkha titles just have a G now, GR is for the Garwhal Rifles

See item 395 at Marlows:

Hi,
that title is for the 6th Gurkha rifles worn 1903-1948 by both officers and OR's.
In 1948 the 'R' was added and the title '6GR' was worn until 1994.

Gurkha titles can be found with both the 'G' or 'GR' depending on the regt and the period.

as far as I am aware all the Garwhali titles I have seen have the name in full.
attached are examples of the 6th ,7th and 10th.

regards

steve

Thanks Steve, that helps a lot. I guess not even Marlows can get it right every time.

Is it possible to date my title from those rectangular lugs on the back I wonder? Do you know when the Gurkha regiments started using those lugs on their badges?

P.S. BY the way I like your displays with the numbering system.

I dont know when that style lug was fitted, my 6G has that type and appears to be a indian made item. Other Regts of the same period have the usual loop type.

If anyone is interested in the Garwhal Rifles their insignia is a follows.

"The 18th Royal Garhwal Rifles wore a black metal shoulder title consisting of a Kings crown over 18RGR. I am certain that this shoulder title had a red felt base to it similar in size to the ST.I have two sizes.
1. 38mm east to west, and 27mm north to south. The larger one is 48mm E to W and 26mm N to S." (info from a friend that collects all thing Indian)

The cap badge was a Maltese cross with a Kings crown above, garter in the middle with a light infantry bugle in the middle of that. Silver for the officers and white metal for the ORs. Size 30 X 25mm."

After independence the should title became Black metal 'GARHRIF'
