Default WW1 Manchester Regt Items - Badge real?

Just obtained this small group. Badge looks far too shiny to be WW1 or am I wrong? Looks like the poor soldier this stuff belonged to went a little loopy, the photo postcard shows him flanked by two medics while he holds a kitten...seriously though, any thoughts on the Badge?

Default Manchesters

The badge looks good, just because it's shiny is in no way detrimental to my mind.

Default question on picture

Hi,
Nice pictures.
All uniforms have one row of 5 buttons.
Two of the men have a dark 2nd button from the top.
Can anyone tell what it is? Why is this button different?
regards,
btns

Note that the medic sitting on the right has used the top button to "lock" his collar.
