Default Peculiar Patches

Hello

New forum member so apologies if my questions are deeply obvious - not to me! Any help in identifying the following cloth patches would be gratefully received.

1. I know this is a Royal Navy Submarine Detector trade badge c WW2? - I have one in red - but this is in yellow thread. What is the difference?

http://www.bmillsdesigns.co.uk/badge...ector-gold.jpg

2. A drum - any thoughts?

http://www.bmillsdesigns.co.uk/badges/drum.jpg

3 A radio operator shoulder patch? WW2? - lightning bolts crossing an O.

http://www.bmillsdesigns.co.uk/badge...operator-1.jpg

4 A radio operator shoulder patch? WW2? - looks exactly like the RAF fist and lightning bolts design but is red on navy - like an RN patch...

http://www.bmillsdesigns.co.uk/badge...operator-2.jpg

5. Winged wheel patch with M.T above -WW2? - pale blue on navy.

There is something similar on another thread (at bottom of page):

http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...t=winged+wheel

...which is an unofficial Parachute Regiment motor transport badge but the wings go down instead of up like mine. The closest in design I found on the web is a Canadian army patch here (a few rows from the top):

Many thanks!

Brian

Speculating on a few of them.

1. No expert on naval badges - but I suspect this is NOT Royal Navy.

2. This could be "Guards" issue.

3&4. Suspect these are for wear on Army battledress?

5. Unofficial WRNS badge for an MT driver?

Your detector badge is for a Dress Uniform. The uniform that naval chaps wore in parades and for ceremonies. In the early years of W.W.11 wire covered with gold was used but later on yellow thread for economic reasons. Could be British or Canadian

Default Thanks

Hi

Thanks for your suggestions. Glad I din't mess the links up!

The yellow Submarine Detector patch is absolutely identical to the red RN one I have - so still a mystery. Do you mean it could be another Empire/Commonwealth navy?

RAF Regiment went for the pale blue colour scheme on flashes and patches as far as I can tell - unless you can point me at an example of the red on navy. Ditto with the WRNS - have you seen an example?

I said they were peculiar - not just me being dense then!

Brian

Default navy

I not certain why you think it is still a mystery. Gold thread ones were identical to the working-uniform red thread badges. The Cdn navy wore the same badges during WWII as the British, and you have correctly identified the trade badge. Maybe other Commonwealth navies did wear the British varieties, I don't know.

A friend (a serious collector and dealer) came up with the following:

"(2) Drum :Trade musical qualification badge worn on sleeve by Army / Air Force etc. yours seems to be Army. I would suggest WW2 as the early ones were brass.

(3) "O" with lightning bolts: Wireless operator R.A.F. overseas issue Malta being favorite.

(4) Hand grasping lightning bolts: Radio Operator/ Mechanic red on dark background. for issue to R.A.F. N.C.Os overseas badges worn on khaki uniforms many were issued to servicemen in Malta.

(5) Winged M.T. is W.R.N.S. ( motorised transport ) which included dispatch riders and motor drivers in general. (which backs up Staffsyeoman's suggestion above - many thanks there!)"

Thanks again to Staffsyeoman and James Gilbert for your help - Brian
