I can't add anything to comments already posted, nor pass opinion on the close ups shown, all I can say is " a splendid frame of period badges"

Would love to see a close up of the "Royal Dragoons" if possible Its a strange one to be in the WW1 collection as stated....... if the 105th Eagle was worn then why would the Royal Crest turn up...... this did not re-appear until c1919 according to common wisdom? Could it be that reinforcements were sent out with the Royal Crest?

scroll is mis-struck with a faint set of duplicate letters to the left. (might need a glass to see them )

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed info here on this collection - particularly thought the 'cast eagle' would remain a mystery.

Hi Mike

From the late Victorian to c1910 the Royal Crest was worn (QVC/KC looped), from c1910 to 1919 the "Un-official" 105th Eagle was worn. The Regiment was ordered to wear the Royal Crest again after the Great War.

The badge you have has a very dodgy name plate.....as seen on all the badges of this design...

The crown will also have "clipped" lower corners to fit the plate tabs. Personally I cant see this badge "design" passing the Regimental QM's inspection?

I don't think so. I don't find it odd that it appears in the collection - the eagle were privately bought by the regt so a replacement (either soldier or badge) would have been issued this one. he was far more likely to give the issue one away than the scarce eagle one. The QM does not have an opinion as he is in France and has no influence over war-time production or what is issued in UK.

The short answer is I dont know..... until I can find photo evidence and date confirmation then its just my "opinion". However, I have three KC badges in my 1RD collection that would pass the RQMS and also cover the date range I have quoted....... they are all of the same design also..... with a name plate that is also found on the Victorian Badge.

c1903-10

c1919-48

Confirmed 1945 1RD Trooper (Red round patch behind the badge, prior to 1945 this was not worn.)

Mike

Thanks for that....... its exactly the same as my badge of this type...... I dont dismiss it ..... I am just sceptical I have not seen a "Polished" badge of this type yet either?

The badge shown below is a tantalising glimpse of the c1907-14 period..... but there is not enough detail to confirm!? To me its the badge I have shown and not the one we are discussing.
He was based in the UK when the Regiment was out in India/South Africa.

They are identical aren't they?, right down to the nicks on the bottom rim of the crown, which I would have assumed to be wear and tear - which is not the case they're in the die

They are hand clipped in my opinion.....if you look at the right corner of my badge there are two clips compared to your one and the clips vary and are not identicle?

Here is a photo at Ludgershall 1914, the 1RD have just got back from SA and not one of them is wearing the Royal Crest, all Eagles. Note also the Puggaree.... its appears to have a black backing cloth (on some of the Pith Helmets)?

Default Terrific badges of the period

What a tremendous post and series of informed comments, a great read.

I would be interested in seeing if I may the backs of the DLI and Lincs badges as I find it fascinating in the differeces in quality of striking and it helps forming an opinion as to teh normal range plus seeing whether they are sliders or lugs. For that matter could we see a picture of the rear of the set per chance to get a sense of what was worn or traded as "obsolete" at that time.

Congratulations to a thrilling set of badges and for inspiring many with all the possible rersearch, cheers Dean.
