Tartan Patch

Can anyone name this tartan patch worn on a Glenalmond otc badge?

Ahhh - tartans, my favourite topic!! Sadly, I do not know much about tartans worn by OTC units (yet!!), but here are some likely candidates for comparison. Left to right:

Murray of Atholl
Murray of Atholl (variant; wider sett)
Davidson

The more I compare them, I have to agree with Peter - it looks to be Murray of Atholl.

Hi Ron,

Hard to say - not one I've seen used as a backing before. And we can pretty much rule out the 'normal' Regimental tartans. My guess here (with emphasis on the guess part) is that it is probably Hunting Mackinnon, although it could also possibly be Buchanan Hunting.

Sorry I can't provide better info than that - perhaps someone else will know better.

My previous stab at Murray tartan was based on the connection of Glenalmond OTC with Perthshire and what I thought was a silmilarity between the illustration in Grierson of the tartan worn by the 4th V.B. Royal Highlanders and the piece of tartan with the OTC badge.

The second badge appears to be in Bloomer page 73/74 which he indentifies as 2nd A.B. Perthshire Rifle Volunteers 1874-1880 .

The tartans worn by units within the Admin Bn. include Breadalbane Campbell, Macdonald ,Royal Stuart and Atholl (Murray) unfortunatly I dont know the sett for 2 of these.

After 1883 the whole battalion adopted the same uniform with 42nd tartan kilts.

Sorry I cannot give a definitive answer

Hi Malc,

Near as I can tell from the pics, I've attached a list below. Bear in mind it is hard to decipher when a backing is cut at random rather than centered on a portion of the sett. Also, several of these seem to have a smaller sett pattern than I normally see.

1st image:
Red Erskine (RSF/RHF pipers) / Government tartan

Hunting Stewart (RS) / Cameron of Erracht (Cameron Highs)


2nd image:
not sure here, not enough to go by / Douglas (Cameronians)

Mackenzie (Seaforths, HLI) / Government


3rd image:
Mackenzie (Seaforths, HLI) / Royal Stewart

Douglas (Cameronians) / Hunting Stewart (RS)


4th image:
Red Erskine (RSF/RHF pipers) / Government

Gordon (Gordon High's) / Hunting Stewart ?? - hard to tell

Ray here. There is nothing in Robert Bains book "The Clans & tartans of Scotland' that comes close to these,That book is not really complete by any means, also the swatch's are almost too small to tell. the lower left in the first group could be Campbell nothing else just Campbell, the lower right in the last or 4th group could be Murray of Atholl . The swatch is so small that you've got to ignore the green vertical stripe & consentrate on the blue square. If you have a source check out these two.
