Default RWF - WWI CELLULOID BADGE - RPC IMAGE

Here we have a RPC (by B Pinnington, Ainsdale, 21/06/15 Liverpool) sent to address in MerthyrTydfil.

Have tried to enlarge two of the solidiers as appear to be wearing celluloid badges.

Thing is they do not seem to match the two design known as below, one being RWF in black on white back ground and the second Dragon in Red on white disk with green and red checkered border (know there b&w images but these are the colour)

Anyone hazard what they are or maybe have one in their collection.

Jonathan

Jonathon,

I must say that to me they look identical to the second example, the dragon.

regards

Simon.

I thought they were similar but didn't seem to have the checkered band (well not on the image I could get), thought would put up in case someone comes up with a definite answer and maybe/hopefully the real thing.

Kevin

Crossed my mind but the only two versions generally known about are the two at the top of the thread, so there must be another version out there, was hoping someone had one or an image, its like that 6 SWB no one seems to have one of them (why he didn't buy it when he saw it !!!!).

A recent pick up of one of the badges referred to in the OP. In remarkable condition considering its age.

Mike,
There’s another thread on here which shows three types of Welsh related celluloid badges together. I had it the other day but can’t find it now.

The 3rd RWF badge had a hammer price of £170.00.

I’ve always been puzzled by this badge 41st, because whilst Y Draig Goch is correct, the 23rd had no association whatsoever with green and white chequering, but it’s not dissimilar to the van dyke edge of a 24th side drum. The more conventional cellulose disc with rampant dragon above gothic lettering and the number 3 is classic RWF, but I’m not convinced that the one with chequered edging is. What provenance do we have as to its actual wear, and by whom?

That is exactly what I’m trying to get to the bottom of, along with whether or not the version with dragon over the green base was intended for all Welsh Army recruits, or just Newport/Monmouthshire recruits.

What I do have is contained within the letter from R H Johns below confirming that they were commissioned to produce badges for the Welsh Army Corps, of which the service battalions of the RWF would have formed part. The badges being based as stated on Welsh Tudor design. This later would have course followed the colours of Harri Tudur’s banner as flown at Bosworth. The second piece of information confirms this but I can’t remember where I picked it up. As such, it would make sense for the green & white border for all Welsh Army Corps service battalions, not just the RWF.
Why 3 RWF & 6 SWB have their own celluloid badges I have no idea.
