Do you know when this practice started?
I do have number that would have been West German before the nations combined. I am wondering now if they were worn in the same manner.

Not sure when the practice started but i would say the 90s for wear on the field uniforms in large scale. Unfficial/unathorized patches units have made all the time up through the years but more as a novelty patch. The practise here in norway 70-90s was that we used those patches on our green NATO sweater to show which unit we belonged to.

I have a large number of them that are from before the unification of West and East.
The person that I got them from, in the 80s, over there called them track suit patches. For that reason I have not gotten any of the newer ones. It looks like I need to rethink that.
