Date this 4th Division sign
Not sure if this is ww2 or later. It is silk or rayon, not the modern poly material.
Thanks much folks, CB |

Was the printed version of the one with the black background also around 1956?

According to "Badges on Battledress" the 11th Armoured Division became the 4th Infantry Division in April 1956.
The new 4th Division adopted the last wartime pattern of divisional sign, red on white, later changing to red on black. |

The black-backed printed version was around but was gradually replaced by the woven version once combat dress was introduced as the printed versions did not stand up well to regular washing.

Many thanks for your comments, gentlemen. I see that the printed version was introduced first, being gradually replaced by woven one. That's good enough for me!
