Unknown medical? badges
I posted this thread yesterday in the wrong section, trying again today.
The AMS badge is 35mm wide and has a brooch back, and I have often wondered if it is WW1 Army Medical Service. Never seen an official AMS badge as obviously RAMC badges would have been worn. I have seen "Army Medical Service" stamped in ink on WW1 armbands with a Geneva Cross, sometimes with an officer signature as well. It has never been clear to me why AMS was stamped and not RAMC. Is the SB WW1 Stretcher Bearer? Why four lugs on the back? |

I doubt either are 'Army Medical Service' or 'Stretcher Bearer' but I have no evidence to back my doubts, just a gut feel.
The Army Medical Service was like a governing body of all things medical, so the Geneva cross arm bands were stamped with the Army Medical Service mark and issued to all associated medical units, not only the RAMC. I suspect the AMS is just someones initials made into a brooch. As for the SB, not sure. |
