monogram help

Hello,
I found this tea spoon and the Royal Signals nutcracker during holidays.
No problem with the nutcracker but I need help with the tea spoon monogram "CMR", not necessarily military. If someone have a clue ?

There were originally 7 battalions of Canadian Mounted Rifles, each with a distinct badge, and the cipher, for what it's worth, doesn't match any of them. However, the letter 'C', stamped heavily into the stem - I suspect in a separate operation from the engraving - suggest 'C Company' or 'C Squadron' to me, so a military origin is likely, IMO.

Thanks very much for your research on the canadian side. Even if it is possible, the maker is "Walker&Hall" based in Sheffield.

Hi guys

The good old monogram debate. I've wasted many an hour trying to work this stuff out!

I think that your spoon is possibly NOT military. When I see this sort of monogram it usually stands for either "M.......... Rifle Club" or (more likely from the style of the initials) "M............. Rowing Club".

We have quite a few rowing clubs that feature this type of monogram on the side of their clubhouses.

Got time for a "collector's story"? Years back, I bought a nickel silver spoon (a Hannovarian "rat tail" for those with an eye to antique flatware...) with a nice cartouche "R.F.A/ 119". I only bought it because it was cheap and the engraving was nice.

I then read a book written by an American who had provided motor transport to French et al. during the retreat from Mons. He recorded meeting "Captain Grenfell who had won the VC saving the guns of the 119th Battery RFA"

If only that spoon could talk!
