Default BN SIGNS

Hi Mark

Yes was contacted by the guy who is writing it - from what I can gather it is only the badges - both metal and cloth of the New Armies (Kitchener's Army) that the book is about.

My aim is to do a coloured chart of the signs worn by each division insofar as the 12 infantry battalions, pioneer battalion, 4 MG coys and 3 TMBs.

Regards

Talos

He's been at that for a while, he contacted me on this subject (Camel Corps if I remember) during the early 1990s while I was writing the colour patch book. I always wondered how far he'd got with it.

Dean,

I think it depended on which Battalion as to where exactly they were worn, from the little research I have done at the IWM the tops of both arms and the top of the back seem to be reasonably generic for Battalion insignia, of course Company insignia is something different as may Battalions would not have worn such and as already pointed out such insignia may have been worn only for a specific operation or otherwise short period of time and possibly not officially sanctioned, additionally coloured insignia worn on the back was used for other reasons such as for example designating those tasked with cutting wire, so if they became a casualty someone else could take the wire cutters off the body, a most confusing area of study and of course collecting.

Kind Regards

FMT600

P.S. What great examples you have in your album, thank you for sharing them.

Many thanks for the extra information FMT600. A quick look through a number of the Pals series of books has a number of patches worn to the top of the arm. I shall annotate references to the album as I find them.

I know from the writings of my Durham Pals grandfather that for the attack on Serre on the first day of the battle of the Somme they wore a cut out metal disk on their backs as an aid to recognition of advancing troops. Clearly this was an improvisation for a single action. An action that became a slaughter for the Pals of the 31st Division and so many more of Kitchener' army.

Cheers and pleased they have been of interest to Forum members, Dean.
