Having now seen an image of what is undoubtedly a Genuine 1&2LG badge, Rob you can call off your search (for now) seems they look like being OSD! Unless anyone has a Gm example they'd like to show?
Thanks Andy, perhaps you may add an image to the thread? But as they are so rare there may be the slim danger of a Faker making use of it? Andy |

OSD sounds right from what I've just be advised. I was speaking to a gentleman who said, there were several articles written by an ex Life Guard who served from c1914 through to 1930's +, published in a Historical journal? which allegedly covers the insignia of the Life Guards. I may be getting a copy of them if he can locate them, so I'll let you know. There is also a rumour of a possible Gilt & Enamel version!!!!....now that would be interesting. Rob Quote:

Rob,
I would be very interested in a copy of the article, if that would be possible? The G&E example is unlikely as they would have worn the Universal Household Cav badge in the Forage cap! Although there was a dealer (Wharton) selling them a while ago! Andy |

I'll keep you posted, the chap's got to locate the articles first....which may take a while. No, I'm not convinced of the existence of a genuine G&M Badge either, but perhaps one should never say never, and keep an open mind. Rob |

For further information;
I have just located the following contained within "The Life Guards" - Dress and Appointments 1660-1914, by Charles Stadden (c.1971). "It was not until 1922 that the Life Guards became a single Regiment as a result of drastic defence reductions implemented at that time. The 1st and 2nd Regiments were duly amalgamated, the dress distinctions of both being retained. 'A' and 'B' Squadrons had the crimson flask cord (1LG) and 'C' and 'D' the blue (2LG) until 1927 when, due to further economies, the Regiment was reduced to three squadrons and the red flask cord was adopted by all ranks." With the comment "dress distinctions of both being retained" it would be fair to assume that 2 squadrons retained the cap badge of 1LG and the other two that of 2LG? Then more than likely they all assumed the LG badge c.1927? I think further evidence that there was not widespread use of the "1st and 2nd Life Guards" cap badge? Andy.
I would go farther - it would have been unthinkable to change the cap badge but not the regtl distinctions. This reinforces the view that any 1&2nd LG cap badge would have been worn outside the Sqns at regtl (officer) level. Alan |

I agree 100% and I'm now pretty certain that the Gilding-metal "1st and 2nd Life Guards" cap badge is a "Fantasy Item" and only exists in OSD (Bz)? It also states in the same publication that in 1928 "An entirely new button was devised", this is supported in "Buttons of the British Army 1855-1970 by Howard Ripley", showing patterns for both 1st and 2nd prior to 1922 and then a single pattern post 1928. "No" 1st & 2nd single pattern button is indicated! Andy Last edited by 2747andy; 03-11-13 at 07:05 PM. |

Keith,
Another badge you probably do not need to look for in an ORs pattern; http://www.clanfieldmilitaria.com/vi...h=55725&phqu=2 Unless you have £200 to throw away? Andy |

The Badge Who Never Was?
As it’s a glum and grey autumnal Thursday thought I’d throw this one into the mix for debate.
I’m 100% certain it’s genuine. No signs of ever having blades or being bronzed and has clearly seen some ‘bull’. I’m reliably informed collars were not worn. If only perhaps a dozen of these exist, no doubt the same batch, I can see no reason for different fixings compared to the two know originals (one broken) that I’ve seen. Comments and ideas most welcome. |

Wow, rare as, it looks good to me also. The one in the start of this thread is a cast copy of a fake.
