Yes, his 1900-02 is from the same die as mine by the looks of it, but with slider.

Here is a 1900-2 badge which I believe to be a correct example. Even spacing between the letters and a complex number of sweat holes. Being four oblong holes behind the South Africa circlet, one which is obscured by the slider, a small round one on each ray of the star and a large round one in the centre. Nicely shaped slider with a slight crimp at the top.
Hope it helps in your investigation. Mark Last edited by dubaiguy; 22-08-19 at 06:56 AM. |

Very nice and completely different in terms of manufacture and material than the example in the original post.

The badge in the original post is being returned to the seller this morning for a full refund.

I think it is a great shame if these spurious badges have found their way into collections.

Both -02 and -2 are genuine variations.
EJ Martin's badge article from 70 years ago shows the 1900-2 badge. |

I also have a similar one to yours - however the lettering is good. Chris |

Cam,
when I received the badge, I checked it over and something didn't seem right so I looked at as many threads and examples in albums as I could. I found several different types and the one in your album, which appears to have the same flatness as mine, seemed to be the closest to my example. The photograph in your album is quite small and cannot be brought closer to view the finer details. So if I have done your badge a disservice, I apologise. Simon. |

No offence taken - I would rather know what people think as to what is good and what is bad so everyone knows what to look out for. Chris |

Hi All,
I missed this thread as I was away, so just catching up. Thought I'd start by posting some pics of mine, which I agree, is very much like yours, HighWood, however, without the die flaws. The significance of that? Not sure... I will also say mine came from a reputable and respected source, which I am not saying makes it rock solid, but does mean, for me, I'd need compelling evidence before I'd declare it bad. Thoughts and observations most welcome, good and bad. Cheers, Tim |
