Question Vehicle Tac Signs

I'm aware that GREEN was the background colour used for Infantry battalions vehicle tac signs in Armd Bdes, but can anyone please confirm that RED was used for Infantry unit vehicles generally and in Inf Bdes?

Tony,

The colours of the tac signs represent the seniority of the Brigade in the Division: Red - Senior Brigade; Green - Second Brigade; and Brown - Junior Brigade.

The link here shows the breakdown of infantry divisions for WWII in more detail

In an armoured division the armoured brigade would have red tac signs as the senior brigade, but within this brigade there would be a motor infantry battalion.

In the example of the Guards Armoured Division in Normandy, in the link posted previously, within 5th Guards Armoured Brigade, this would have been 2nd Armd Bn GREN GDS, 1st Armd Bn COLDM GDS, 2 Armd Bn IG and 1st Motor Bn GREN GDS. Their second brigade, 32nd Guards Brigade was made up of 5th Bn COLDM GDS, 3rd Bn IG and 1st Bn WG (different battalions were in the Division at other times).

The colours of the vehicle tac signs used by infantry battalions therefore depended on the seniority of their brigade. An infantry battalion in the senior armoured brigade of an armoured division would have red vehicle tac signs; an infantry battalion in the second brigade would have green vehicle tac signs.

Hope this helps.

Thumbs up Veh Tac Signs

Thanks for the info, guys. WW2 vehicle markings were obviously more complex than it was when I served in Germany 1960s - 1980s!!

I'm trying to find the tac sign for the Inf Bn in the Faroe Islands Force. I do know fron the National Archives that in 1944 -45 they were allocated the number '26' but am unsure of the background colour. As they were the only Inf unit in the Force, I'm now presuming that it'd have been RED.

Default TACTICAL NUMBERS

Where is the Tactical number data kept - what unit uses 490?.
white numerals on a red background

What document holds this data. Where is it kept?

What does the white bar along the bottom denote?

Any help appreciated

Late to the party but...
26 was used by the Cameronians on the Faroes. The plate it was displayed on was in their regimental colours.
