18 UKSF Signal Regiment
Can anyone confirm if it is true that 18 Signal Regiment has been granted a new cap badge or is pushing to be granted one?
They have a crest which is worn on their stable belt and there is a rumour that their hierarchy wants this to be the regimental cap badge as qualified special forces signallers are or were wearing a mix of R Sigs, Royal Marines, Royal Navy and RAF cap badges The badge used on the stable belt is Excalibur pointing upwards with three lighting strikes and Roman numerals XVIII. The SF Signallers wings were originally only to be worn on No2 Dress but are now routinely worn on combat dress. |

The badge was made for trials a good few years back but not taken on so as not to attract attention, used on stationary and camp signage etc so I was told at the time.

This is what the badge looks like, if there was one made or if its under consideration. The idea that it attracts too much attention I'm not sure about, the black stable belt and SAS beret or RM beret with distinctive wings are pretty noticeable. That brings me back to the original question are they considering the badge for a second time?

Trial proposed beret in album
Not too long after the inception of 18SR a small amount of the berets were sent to the unit.
However as we know the idea of the capbadge has not been adopted and as such the berets were not relevant. Feedback was however sourced about the idea of having such a concept. Ive no idea what the outcome was. |

I have one of these trial badges, it came from a very good source 9 years ago so it would be at least that.

The Black Stable Belt and unique TRF should be sufficient indictors as to unit identification as when on active service the beret is not normally worn anyway.
Royal Signals personnel are posted in & out of the regiment as are the others as far as I am aware, so a regimental cap badge really is not needed. It is not as if it is the only multy badge unit in the forces today. |
