Herefordshire.

HI, can anybody give a heads up on this please ?

The design is a collar badge used up to 1961, Churchill states that some of these were worn on the beret and are found with sliders. My example also shows no signs of ever having had loops.

I recently discussed this badge with Wilf (Orasot). To date there’s no picture of these being worn in the beret and it’s not mentioned in the Hertfordshire Regiment book by Sainsbury - credit Wilf for that info.

P.S. I’m sure it’s a typo but your title says Herefordshire, the scroll of course reads Hertfordshire.

Ahh, sorry for the Herefordshire\Hertfordshire mistake. There are no signs of removed loops on this example either. Thanks Luke and Wilf for that information.

No worries Jim. I wasn’t being pedantic mentioning it rather me putting ‘Hertfordshire’ in the text will now make it searchable on the forums search engine.

When I was looking for this exact Herts badge 3 weeks ago I couldn’t find anything on the forum about it so yours may be the first thread to address it and of great use to others.

As I understand it, that badge began life as the cap badge of the Hertfordshire Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment TF, worn c1908-1910, with the design later being used, in facing pairs, for the collar badges of the Hertfordshire Regiment.

Hi Hoot....is there any way to substantiate this? I would love to think that it is so, but without some kind of proof we are no further forward.

The striking and sliders on these badges are all very uniform from the 5 examples I’ve seen. They’re definitely not Edwardian in date. Everything about them from metal, strike, slider shape, braze colour etc. is considerably more modern.

I am yet to see any evidence of this badge being used as a headdress badge and would love to know where Churchill got his information from.

I was never in any doubt about the one I had in my collection. I purchased it in Bedford and it was in an old tin box along with three 1st (Herts) Volunteer Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment cap badges, two being the standard size badge and the other one being the smaller side cap badge. There were also two Hertfordshire Regiment cap badges with them. I have no doubt they were all worn by the same man over several years. I bought them in about 1975 and, much to my regret, I sold them along with the rest of my collection about thirty years ago. I quit collecting due to all the crooked skanks that were by then infesting the hobby and looking at the state of things today I would say I did the right thing. I wish I had kept them now but that's life.

Nozzer, all my information came from old collectors, sadly now long dead, who knew their stuff when it came to the local units (I'm an old Bedfordshire Clanger) and some had even been around when the TF was formed. It's a shame that they took their knowledge with them when they went.
