Default 1914 Recruiting badge

Just acquired in a trade this 1914 recruiting badge just shy of 2” across. 5 CM Maker marked Fattorini Bradford sadly missing I one lug.

I have seen another dated 1915 worn on a red armband and believe this is how they were worn if anyone has any information on these I would be interested.

We’re these being worn before August 1914? Or did it just cover the last 5 months of 1914.

Regards

Stephen

Hi

I've got a 1915 badge that has no maker's mark and one re-affixed copper loop (the other broken off).

Until I saw the example with the armband, I thought that it was some type of cap badge worn to "make a statement" in much the same way that the recruiters would march through the towns with flags flying and drums beating...

Hi Stephen

Yes, of course. I did post a photo of it some time back and you may find it under my name or doing a search by topic.

In the interim, mine is 50mm in diametre and is clearly also made by Fattorini.

If you wonder about the little bits of white in the blue/ red enamel, it's because when they were stoning back the Union Jack they failed to clean the badge properly before re-firing it.

YouTube will show you how this is done on "art" enamel but the process hasn't changed......EVER!

Thanks Tim! It would have been quicker for me to take another one than to try and find it.

Stephen, let me know if you want a photo of the reverse although it's plain and just one "dongy" lug but now I know what they should look like!

Did anyone ever post about what Area 22 might have been? I've already made the "Area 51" joke so hands off, it's mine!

I've also found that I have two largish, rectangular, pinback badges that just have "1914" on them and in blue enamel.

Both are heavily marked with the maker: "S.Mc L. & Co"

Found this description of one that was sold :

"Part of the ‘New Army’ recruiting drive of 1915, this is one of a series of badges for different recruiting areas.
The areas are now difficult to research exactly, my own ’scant’ effort can only show this as being the North West of England, possibly the Cheshire area."

Also found an old thread with a list that appears to confirm this :

WW1 Recruiting Badges

Hi Mike

Great link and thanks for that.

Nothing quite like a good exchange of views to spark ones interest! I have what I take to be a WW1 badge for: ARMY RECRUITING STAFF

You could also read it as" RECRUITING STAFF ARMY" or "STAFF ARMY RECRUITING"

Now I'm just being silly....

Usual red/ white/ blue colours and the GS coat of arms as seen on MILLIONS of buttons.

Pic when I can manage!

Hi

Don't know if I didn't hit the right button but now can't seem to find this post!

Anyway, if these have already been posted, blame a recent birthday and advancing years.

So, these two 1914 brooches, marked S.McL. & Co. Possible that this firm made h/m articles and used their mark for these as well.

War/service related or Primrose League "service bars"? Opinions gratefully received.

They may have come together of separately.

Also the Army Recruiting Staff badge with Firmin's mark to reverse. WW1?

Hi Mike

Could have been my one, although I thought that it came from eBay as there was a UK collector selling off a large variety of this type of badge.

Must write things down in future!
