WRAC serving in Northern Ireland 1949 - 1953
I have seen a early image of a WRAC wearing the WOMEN'S ROYAL ARMY CORPS shoulder title with ULSTER title beneath this and the Northern Ireland Command patch with Queen's crown under these.
My question is "Did WRAC, from their formation in 1949, while in NI wear this combination of titles and patch with Kings Crown ? Both patches I have are printed gold on green. Sorry should have said 2nd one is not printed. Jerry engr9266

Some background below. Given the date of introduction of the WRAC Ulster title and the fact that the QC version would be post-1953 it seems like the answer should be Yes, they did wear it with the KC version. An example worn with the QC version is shown. Note that the Ulster title was only worn by the women serving with the AA Brigade.
Jon Formed in Northern Ireland AA Command’s post-war 51st (Ulster) AA Brigade comprised the Regular 60th HAA Regiment, the Territorial 245th, 246th and 502nd HAA Regiments and 247th and 248th LAA/SL Regiments, supported by a Fire Command Troop, a signal squadron, RASC Motor Transport and REME Workshop Companies. The Brigade’s 1949 application to wear a red on blue ‘Ulster’ subsidiary arm title was supported by GOC Northern Ireland who thought it would have a beneficial effect on recruiting. The War Office Dress Committee approved the red on blue title in March 1950 but four versions were listed when introduced into service in May 1951; red on blue for Gunners, white on blue for the Brigade signal squadron and yellow on blue for its MT Company and REME AA Workshops. WRAC serving with Mixed Regiments, the Fire Command Troop, Signal Squadron and MT Company adopted a version with white letters on beech brown. |

Super awesome!!! Have the Ulster title, so now need ot find the crowned harp to go with it!!! Interesting too, that it looks like she is also wearing the ATS lanyard. I did not realize the WRAC wore it.

Not too good with a needle and thread!
The ATS type lanyard is being worn in Jon's photo but on a Battle Dress that with a Queen's Crown formation sign must post date 1953. Material Regulations Volume Pamphlet 15 list authorised lanyards as follows: 1954 - WRAC - Dark Green and Beech Brown (i.e. not the ATS colours) 1966 - as above with a note that 'personnel of WRAC may wear lanyard of employing arm in lieu' 1975 - as above 1977 - as above 1980 - nothing listed against WRAC In my time from 1969 I cannot recall ever seeing WRAC personnel wearing any lanyard - possibly because the Lovat Green No2 Dress was without pockets so nowhere to 'tuck in' the end of the lanyard! Also, but never say never, I have not seen a dark green and beech brown lanyard. 200+ lanyards from my collection in my album: https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...p?albumid=2027 Tim

When I served at COD Bicester in the early 70's the WRAC girls working in HQ, Company Offices or Staff Car Drivers wore Green No2 Dress with no Lanyard but RAOC Collar Badge on left hand side.
The girls who worked in the Storage Depots or MT on 'other vehicles' wore a Khaki Female Battle Dress as in Post 2 with RAOC Lanyard and Collar Badge, plus RAOC Stable Belt in Shirt Sleeve Order on Slacks or Skirt. WRAC at Ord Depot Kinnegar also wore Khaki Female Battle Dress with as I remember the Ulster Flash. |
