1st Royal Dragoons, 2nd Boer War.
Hi All
Thought these would be of interest there is a book by "Ron Kidd -2006" that describes many of the Pith Helmet badges of the 2nd Boer War..... trawling through the internet I have picked up these images. Note the 17th Lancer Rosette BTW! DIDNT SOMEBODY HAVE THIS ROSETTE ON THE FORUM RECENTLY (and did know what it was)? 1RD (Red Patch) As follows:- The Regiment arrived in South Africa in 1899.Photographs show Officers wearing Wolsey Fs helmets at their UK embarkation with a dark blue (probably black) fold to the top of the pagri. After arrival in South Africa a distinctive scarlet rectangle was abopted by all ranks with white embroidered initials (fig.107), worn on the left side of the FS helmet. Later in the war a less conspicuous horizontal [dark blue or black rectangle] (fig.108) was worn on both sides of the FS helmet. The black cockade and white emroidered on black is another variation also worn.
