Default Army Medical Department QVC

Hi All,
I have this Army Medical Department badge which I believe is an officer's field service cap badge. I would be grateful for help in determining period it was worn. Kipling and King do not mention it.
Thanks, Tinto

Default Army Medical Corps

I think this is a pouch or binocular case badge as it has screw posts. Headdress badges generally had loops during the Victorian era.

Hi Sonofacqms,
Thanks for your comments. I did think it might have been a pouch badge but they are usually more robust to stand rough treatment. I wondered also if there may have been a piece of red cloth in the centre.
Cheers, Tinto

Hi again Sonofacqms,
I've been surfing the net for information and have come across these two references.

Bosley’s Sale 12 Sep 2007:
Item 241 Army Medical Department Officer’s forage cap badge circa 1869-84.
A fine and scarce bullion example. Crowned Garter star with strap inscribed “Army Medical Department”; VR cypher to centre. One or two stitching faults. GC (£100 - £150)

Militaria Mart ad:
Victorian Army Medical Department Officers gilt pouch badge circa 1869-84 Crowned pierced strap inscribed " Army Medical Department" ;VR cypher to the centre. Screw posts.GC. Ex Hugh King collection.

So you were correct, my badge is a pouch badge.
Thanks, Tinto

Hi Tinto,
Yes this is the pouch badge and I dont believe they wore a red backing to it.
The AMD also had a thistle crossbelt badge.

The Medical Staff wore the same cross belt badge but with a small scrolled title "MEDICAL STAFF" (picture posted).

If you ever get tired of the pouch badge, could I get 'first refusal' on it please. I would be interested in doing a trade or part trade/purchase.

Regards
Steven

Hello Steven,
Very nice badge you have shown!
I'll hang onto my pouch badge for the time being, thanks, but will keep you in mind.
Cheers, Tinto

Evening Gents,
I thought I'd add this to the thread, picked it up today at Farnham, lovely badge & I couldn't resist. It was sold as a pouch badge, like yours Tinto only in white metal. All the best,
Wilf.

Very nice badge, Wilf! Thanks for showing it. Would white metal indicate Volunteers?
I envy you in Britain having the opportunities to visit the Militaria shows. Must be still a lot of good stuff available.
Cheers, Tinto

Thankyou Tinto,
I would say it is Vols, I've had quite a few Volunteer Medical bits from this seller lately & he's got plenty more yet I believe. So many badges & not enough money
Wilf.

Hello Wilf, I have a similar badge but named to the H.A.C. I understood it to be a Martingale from Horse furniture, but Hey, I'm still a bit "Green" where badges are concerned!..They still look very nice and greatly appeal to the "Magpie" instinct within me....David J.
