I've posted a Military Police badge with similar construction and detail earlier on the Forum, without any replies. From another forum I seem to remember this badge being described as a fake.

Mark,

With regards to the slider shape, I think this was discussed a while back in a thread and was a 50/50 I think it was on a London Regt badge if I remember, ill try to have a search later

Question Slider thickness

Do the sliders on the RE and CMP badges look as though they have been filed/ground down, these sliders do bear a resemblance to the infamous "ENGLAND" versions.

A thought . . !

I had an RE exactly the same, in every way, the thread was left 50/50 in the end. I gave the badge to a forum friend.

Hi Mark,
I have one similar, it was from the Korean War period.

Not on the CMP badge it doesn't, looks very smooth. Also strong traces of the coating new badges had when issued, don't know the correct nomenclature.

Also, the use of the CMP badge would predate the start of the Korean war by two years, they became 'Royal' in 1948.

Rob
The slider doesn't appear to have been filed down or a name erased.
Cheers

Hi GTB,
Yes, odd isn't it. This RE badge was on a belt of badges brought back from Korea by a Provost sergeant and then given to my father. I wonder if this badge and the one Mark has shown were made in Korea or Japan, the sliders being of this different pattern.
Cheers, Tinto

Default Plastic WWII badge comparison

Gents
Thanks for all your replies.

Not to draw this thread out much longer, but I have now noticed that the mystery metal RE badge shown in my original post is very similar to the plastic badges made by A Stanley & Sons during WWII (with the longer - {odd} crown and veined laurel leaves). I have dug out two Stanley plastic badges from my collection which are slightly different in thickness and overall appearance. They are shown in the picture below next to the metal one. The one closely resembling the metal badge is the middle one which has the designation T-2 on the reverse. (the other is marked 1-A).

It now looks to me that the metal badge is probably based on the plastic design and thus lends credence to Tinto's suggestion that it is post war - Korean period manufacture.

I was going to sell it as it's a busy unattractive badge that I believed was a fake. However, based on your replies I now think it's an interesting oddity from the immediate late/post war period and is a keeper. So into the collection it goes. Thanks again for all your help. Much appreciated.

Hi Mark,
Further to your last post, I have compared my Korean War period RE with a plastic RE badge (the 1-A type) and it is slightly taller than the plastic version.
Here it is again with dimensions.

Re the 'odd' crown. I would expect Henry Tudor to roll over in his grave if he could see it! There's nothing like it in British Royal heraldry. Whereas the Tudor Crown has a shallow curve, the 'odd' crown is a perfect semicircle, which if continued, would form a ball.
I would put it down to a non-British manufactured badge, albeit I doubt if such could ever have been sanctioned for wear.
I would therefore classify it as a curiosity, until further data available.
Of course, this is only my opinion.
