Ministry of Supply
This cloth badge has been described by several badge dealers as "as worn by uniformed personnel attached to the Ministry of Supply".
Does anyone have a picture of it in use, and who did actually wear it? |

Military Staff, Ministry of Supply
It's not only dealers who refer to it as such. It features - with heraldic description and the symbolism of the design - in Lt Col Howard Cole's Badges on Battledress, Third Edition 1953. I recall a photo of it being worn appearing in Soldier magazine in the mid-1950s. The Ministry of Supply was formed on 1 August 1939 and ceased to exist in 1959, its functions being transferred to the Ministry of Aviation, the War Office and the Air Ministry. As far as I know the sign was not worn in the Second World War.

Thanks for the quick reply Mike.
Once again I'm reminded that even though I don't seem to have any wall space left, I still don't have enough books. Rob. |

Ministry of Supply
I own a postwar battledress to a REME officer with a printed pair of these on the arms. But like most collectors I'm still not quite sure what they did!

Ministry of Supply
Was this worn by those soldiers who were working in places such as the Ordnance Depot at Branston, or Chilwell. If the Ministry of Supply was responsible for procuring items to Ordnance specifications did these soldiers actually supervise the procurement process to liaise with manufacturers, designers, etc to ensure that the proposed deisngs met the procurement spec?

I heard of several REME Officers and SNCOs who were based with manufacturers to oversee the production and advise on modification of civilian pattern equipment to make it comply with military specifications., is it possible that this was the case with whoever wore these badges.

Not worn at the Base Ordnance Depots, but by military attached to the 'Ministry of Supply' working or visiting places such as 'Royal Ordnance Factories' or Military Contractors, not assigned to any other military formation. Most were RE, RASC, RAOC or REME
