Curved Gaunt stamp on slider
Hi All,
opinions welcomed on this one. I've never seen a curved ' J R Gaunt London ' mark on a slider before. Is it OK ? Cheers, Mark |

Here's another 'curved' Gaunt mark not in the MM section. This from an Army Apprentices School KC cap badge, so c1947-1953.

It is also seen it on several other badges but not often in comparison to most other Gaunt marks. The most diagnostic badge I’ve seen it on was a Machine Gun Corps meaning it was at least in use by 1922 when the Corps was disbanded. As you know it’s fairly commonly accepted that Gaunt did not mark sliders during WW1 so this may narrow down the period first used. I recently acquired this lovely Rough Riders badge which has a straight 11mm Gaunt mark. I suspect it’s post-WW1 and that stamped lugs to hold the backing plate had been readopted having been discontinued on at least one wartime version. Now the RR became Artillery in 1920 and were badged to them until post-WW2. Whether this narrows the curve mark down further (i.e. post 1920) or the two marks were used concurrently is another matter. There is precedent to two different manufacturers marks being used simultaneously with the Lambourne & Co and Lambourne’s marks both found on 1916 all GM issues. How long this curve mark lasted for I cannot say but I would imagine it was not used for long given it’s scarcity. |

Curiously, I've never come across a curved Gaunt stamp on an OR King's badge.
However, here is a King's, 8th (Irish) Bn 1939 Pattern officer's silver plated caubeen badge. |
