Leics Yeo Bronzed 1922-28
Hi All
Leics Yeo badge Patt 3620/1922 This year is a weird year for finds This badge was the first production badge for the Regiment post 1922 and lasted for 6 years until Col. Codrington had another design made. This ORs badge was originally bronzed and remnants still remain in the back and front of the badge. Its service polished back to the brass and highpoints have been polished down. The voiding is not the best on this one. So, there is a Gm, Wm & Bzd for the Other Ranks.

Looks more like verdigris and the crud leftover from polishing that’s not been removed to me rather than bronzing.
Cannot recall ever seeing this pattern in a bronzed finish for other ranks, but then again not on my interests list so not something I’ve looked for. |

I have a macro camera.... so I will show the bronzed remnants later. The badge has been soap and water cleaned only.
There is verdigris around the braise of the slider

No need really I can see enough. No special tints, macro cameras, scanning electro microscopes needed. If it was bronzed those 3 amply good pics you put up would show it.
If a dealer tried selling that badge as bronzed they’re at best deluded, worst dishonest. Sorry but I think you’re dreaming if you believe that is or was ever bronzed. |

...it certainly has... look at the service polishing .... BUT there is a bit of bronze coat left in the TH of SOUTH in the lower scroll and a bit in the top lower corner of the top coronet. There are some easily visible bits in the back of the badge also. Its a dark chocolate brown (see image below).
The badge was cleaned in soap and water with a nail brush, if that was crud.... it would have come out I assure you The image was taken on a 10 year old smartphone microscope... that fitted phones back then (bit of a tight squeeze today).

In my opinion, that is not remains of bronzing or any other finish, but built up crud from dirt and corrosion.

Its the remnants of a bronzed finish Many years ago I found this DHIY ORs with remnants of the bronze finish on it CB. A couple of people said the same thing as you have. This year this badge turned up. The same badge with its bronze coat complete (and verdigris on the braise).

Look how thick and raised that is. It feels up the reverse so there’s no edge.
If that was a bronze finish you’d never see any detail. It is not a bronze finish. |

The dried on build up from old polish saturated with abraded metal can be very difficult to remove, it can harden like concrete. Similarly old lacquers can do the same. Even chipping away at them with a toothpick after long soaks in vinegar or a solvent can be tough work. |

.....look at the back of the DHIY badge Luke.
The Leics Yeo badge Patt 8895/1916-22 had a bronzed badge for the senior NCOs.... so it makes sense that post 1922 it carried on into Patt 3620/1922 until 1928 when the new Col. Codrington badge came in (same Patt' Number). 1st/1st LYPAO (C = SNCO Cap Badge) 2nd/1st LYPAO (B = SNCO Cap Badge) An example of a partially removed bronze coat on the badge below.. ....and another even more worn example (slider converted to a pin & clasp)
