Default Eighty years ago, Operation Biting...

Hello,
Eighty years ago tonight, on the night of February 27-28, 1942, one of the most successful combined operations of World War II took place. It is a question of seizing essential elements of a German radar located in Bruneval (on the coast, 20km north of Le Havre). Indeed, the Allies badly needed to improve their technology for detecting German bombers and conversely to understand why and how waves of Allied bombers were so quickly detected and relentlessly "awaited" by the German Flak.

On the evening of February 27, 1942, several RAF Withleys would allow the parachuting of about 120 men led by the famous Major Frost (who will be found 2 years later on the Arnhem bridge). The men landed in a landscape completely covered with snow and benefited from a total surprise effect. The various groups carried out their missions and the technological elements of the German radar were "taken" under the intense fire of the enemy which organized himself little by little. The successful mission was now to re-embark all the paratroopers from the small beach of Bruneval thanks to several landing crafts of the Royal Navy. The return to Portsmouth, on the day of February 28, was, among other things, under cover of Free French Navy units.

This raid, greatly helped by the French Resistance, lasted only a few hours but was a resounding success and allowed a real improvement in terms of radio-detection....

1st picture : the reconnaissance photo taken a few weeks before the raid
2nd picture : the model made for the training of parachutists
3rd picture : the return to Portsmouth of the victorious raiders (Major Frost is the 2nd man from the left on the upper structure)
4th picture : the paratroopers display one of their trophies brought back from Bruneval

other picture : evocation of contemporary badges and uniforms of this operation

Kind regards from France
