Lt J King 59th Regt
Is there an expert on the 19th Century British Army who could tell me anything about a Lieutenant J King (described as J King Esq) of Her Majesty's 59th Regiment who would have been serving in Hong Kong in 1850?
His name (as rider) and regiment feature on a large silver cup awarded to the owner of a horse named Great Western that won the Celestial Cup in Hong Kong in 1850. The owner was related to my brother in law (who currently owns the cup). Many thanks. Mike |

Hello Mike
I can't find your man on the 1793-1949 medal rolls, but that doesn't mean that he isn't there. Hopefully someone with more knowledge of these things will be along soon. In the meantime I will try and look into it a bit more. Have a happy New Year, Andy |

The 59th departed for HK in Feb 1849 and served there (and in China) until November 1858 when they left for The Cape.
Have you tried the following http;//gwulo.com/ a site dedicated to the history of HK on which you may well find details of the Racing scene and perhaps further mention of your man. |

I note that your Celestial Cup was displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1851,described thus -
Two silver cups. The Celestial Cup,presented at the Hong Kong races of 1850 and a smaller cup of silver, also run for at the races, are shown among the Chinese contributions. |
